The Road to Bethlehem

We stepped back in time this evening as we traveled to the little town of Delta for a neat display of a traditional Jewish city. We entered the city of Bethlehem and were greeted by Roman soldiers and asked to pay a tax with the tokens we were given at the beginning. As we looked through the marketplace we were able to buy jewelry, pottery, baskets, grapes, cheese, and bread with our tokens. They had people playing instruments, a game of dradle going on, lots of animals throughout, and then we were led to baby Jesus! Ansley has been so anxious to see him all day and then once we got there she was VERY shy, which was unusual. Later we asked her why she didn't want to see Jesus, she said she was afraid of Joseph. We still have no idea why, but it gave us a good laugh!
This little girl was playing some beautiful Christmas music

Ansley loved the donkeys
And the little goats

Chiara is playing the game of dradle!
He was the whole reason we came to the Road to Bethlehem and she just wasn't too sure...

Ansley of course spotted a nativity and wanted to play with it as we were getting ready to have chili and cookies. She seems to spot them a mile away!
This experience was such a great one. We can't wait to make this an annual Christmas tradition. It's such a fun way to learn about traditional Jewish customs AND learn about the birth of Jesus, something that the Jewish people lived in anticipation for and we celebrate today.
